Indictment Definition
A criminal charge alleged by a state or federal prosecutor that is approved by a grand jury if the grand jury finds that probable cause exists to believe a person committed a crime. The grand jury will then issue written charges against the person, which is called an indictment. It is the formal written statement and signed by the prosecutor.
