Allocution Definition

A statement made to the judge by a defendant following their conviction by plea or trial, but before the imposition of the sentence. At a felony or misdemeanor sentencing, the judge will listen to the lawyers argue their respective positions.

After the lawyers complete their sentencing arguments, the defendant can make a final statement, called allocution, before the judge pronounces the sentence.
