Prison Definition
A prison is a building in which people are legally held, for a time period typically exceeding one year, as a punishment for a felony conviction. A sentence of life without parole or natural life requires a defendant to serve the balance of their life in prison. Most prison sentences include a minimum period and a maximum period. Once a defendant has served their minimum period of confinement, they become eligible for parole. There are prisons located throughout Michigan. A jail is different than a prison.
