Field Sobriety Test Definition
Police officers use Field Sobriety Tests to establish probable cause to arrest a person suspected of impaired or drunk driving. The most common field sobriety tests are the horizontal nystagmus test (eye test), walk-and-turn, one-leg stand, and a preliminary breath test (PBT). A driver can lawfully refuse to participate in field sobriety testing.
