Sentence Entrapment Definition
Sentence entrapment is a law enforcement action that coerces or manipulates an individual to participate in criminal conduct that is more severe than the individual is predisposed to commit. For example, suppose police purchase a minute amount of drugs from a known street dealer, establishing a level of trust.
After the 6th purchase, the undercover officer demands a significant amount to trigger a more severe charge. The officer offers to pay ten times the drug’s street value or medication for the defendant’s sick child to persuade the dealer to participate in a more significant transaction. This is an example of sentence entrapment.
